Cardinals-Braves trade sends 26-year-old dominant OF to Atlanta

The Major League Baseball offseason is now in full swing.

Free agency has officially begun across the league, marking the end of the brief quiet period following the World Series. Thursday’s main storyline centered on teams determining whether to extend qualifying offers to their eligible players. However, that wasn’t the only development — the first transactions of the offseason have also started to take shape.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced a handful of roster moves and one that stood out was the fact that the outfielder was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves.

What do the Cardinals have in Michael Siani?

Cardinals fans will remember Siani mainly for his performance in the 2024 season. He has been with the organization since 2023. He played in just five games in the big leagues with St. Louis that year, though. In 2024, he stepped up when St. Louis needed a boost in center field. Victor Scott II had started the season in center that year, but struggled out of the gate. Mix that with the injuries the team dealt with and it led to a consistent opportunity for Siani.

He appeared in 124 games and showcased impressive defense, though his offense didn’t quite match that level. During Spring Training in 2025, he competed for the starting center field spot but ultimately lost out to Scott. Siani made a brief appearance in the majors, playing in 19 games, while spending most of the season in the minors.

Now, he’s heading to Atlanta. Siani served as a reliable depth option for the Cardinals and joins a team that’s been looking to strengthen its outfield. In 2024, he proved he could contribute at the big-league level—particularly with his glove—after receiving his first extended opportunity in the majors. Before that, he played just nine MLB games in 2022 and eight in 2023.

He may no longer be with the Cardinals, but hopefully he is able to find an opportunity in Atlanta.
