Reds-Giants trade will send $53 million fan favorite to San Francisco

The San Francisco Giants are expected to pursue pitching help this offseason, and a high-profile option may have just hit the trade market. According to recent rumors, Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene could be available for trade.

Greene, known for his blazing fastball, has been a standout performer in recent seasons and would be a major boost to the Giants’ starting rotation. In 2025, he posted a 2.76 ERA over 19 starts, racking up 132 strikeouts in 107.2 innings.

This continues a strong stretch for Greene, who earned an NL All-Star nod in 2024 while recording a 2.75 ERA across 26 starts.

At just 26 years old, Greene is considered one of the most exciting young pitchers in the game. Pairing him with Logan Webb would give the Giants a formidable one-two punch at the top of their rotation.

Greene’s fastball regularly sits around 99 mph — an elite velocity, especially for a starter. His sheer power on the mound would make him the hardest-throwing pitcher the Giants have had in years.

However, prying him away from the Reds won’t come cheap. Cincinnati is likely to demand top-tier prospects or MLB-ready talent in return, meaning the Giants would need to be ready to make a significant investment to land him.

Top prospect Bryce Eldridge is almost certainly off the table in any trade talks, but maybe the Giants would be willing to part ways with their top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt. The lefty showed some promise but was inconsistent in his brief few starts with the Giants in 2025.

Maybe the Giants could also include someone like Heliot Ramos in a potential trade. He has proven to be a solid offensive contributor these last two seasons, but his defense definitely leaves a lot to be desired so maybe the Reds could utilize him as more of a designated hitter.

The trade market could represent San Francisco’s best chance to upgrade the rotation in a major way. The team has been reluctant to hand out huge contracts to free agent pitchers, so maybe swinging a trade for an ace on a relatively affordable contract who will not hit free agency until either 2029 or 2030 is the right move.

The Giants will need to be strategic—while Hunter Greene is a thrilling potential addition, the front office can’t afford to overpay. Striking the right balance in trade negotiations will be key. Still, the idea of bringing in such a dynamic, high-octane arm is undeniably appealing. At the very least, president of baseball operations Buster Posey should be reaching out to the Reds this offseason to explore what it might take to make a deal happen.
