The Boston Red Sox acquired Garrett Crochet in a trade last offseason and promptly signed him to a contract extension. With Lucas Giolito potentially departing in free agency, the team may look to bolster its starting rotation regardless.
Outside of Crochet, the Red Sox lack established starters. Brayan Bello had a strong season, but young pitchers like Payton Tolle and Connelly Early are expected to take on larger roles in 2026, despite having limited MLB experience. While some injured pitchers are expected to return, the team still needs another top-tier starter.
Jim Riley of BALLCAP Sports revealed that the Red Sox will trade for Edward Cabrera of the Miami Marlins. Cabrera is under team control through 2028 and could form a strong one-two punch with Crochet. Riley also recommended that Boston consider signing Cabrera to a contract extension if they acquire him.

Cabrera had a 3.53 ERA in 26 starts this year. He struck out 150 hitters and was a bright spot on an otherwise terrible Marlins team. He ste a career high in starts and innings this year, proving he can be relied on in a rotation.
He has dealt with injuries in the past, but he was solid this season. He started the season late and missed a few starts, but still managed to make 26 starts. Crochet, Cabrera and Bello are a trio that could have the Red Sox competing for the American League East title next season.
