Boston Red Sox release 28-year-old struggling catcher from first team

The Boston Red Sox made a roster move, designating 28-year-old catcher  for assignment after a difficult stretch at the plate. Sánchez, who has served as a depth option behind the dish, struggled to produce offensively, hitting under .200 in limited appearances this season.

Red Sox claim catcher Ali Sanchez off waivers from Blue Jays

Originally signed as international talent out of Venezuela, Sánchez has bounced around several organizations in recent years, including stints with the Mets and Cardinals before landing in Boston. Known more for his defensive reliability than his bat, Sánchez failed to lock down a permanent role with the Red Sox, especially as the team looked for more consistent offensive production from the catcher position.

The DFA opens a roster spot for Boston, which continues to juggle late-season evaluations and possible September call-ups ahead of the offseason. The team now has seven days to trade, release, or outright Sánchez to the minor leagues if he clears waivers.

This move reflects the Red Sox’s push to retool their depth as they prepare for key decisions heading into 2026, with catching depth remaining one of the organization’s priorities.
