Boston Red Sox confirm the signing of another standout reliever to bolster depth

Even though the 2025 Major League Baseball season is nearing its end, there are still some roster moves happening around the league.

That was the case  when a familiar name resurfaced. Former St. Louis Cardinals reliever J has reportedly signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to Tom Caron of NESN.

“Brebbia – a Sharon, MA native – has signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox per sources,” Caron said.

Cardinals, John Brebbia embrace new technology

Cardinals fans will remember John Brebbia for his solid three-year run in St. Louis’ bullpen. From 2017 to 2019, he played a key role in the relief corps. In his rookie season in 2017, Brebbia posted an impressive 2.44 ERA with 51 strikeouts and just 11 walks over 51 2/3 innings. He followed that up in 2018 with a 3.20 ERA across 45 appearances, striking out 60 and walking 16 in 50 2/3 innings. In 2019, he made a career-high 66 appearances, recording a 3.59 ERA and striking out a personal-best 87 batters over 72 2/3 innings.

Unfortunately, Brebbia missed the entire 2020 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Following the procedure, the Cardinals chose not to tender him a contract, ending his time with the team. He made his return to the majors in 2021 with the San Francisco Giants, though he struggled that year, posting a 5.89 ERA across 18 appearances.

Over the course of his eight-year MLB career, Brebbia has pitched for the Cardinals, Giants, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, and Detroit Tigers.

Now, he’s reportedly set to join the Boston Red Sox on a minor league deal. While this move won’t directly impact the Cardinals, it’s always good to see a former player—especially one who contributed meaningfully during his time in St. Louis—get another chance in the league.

The MLB season is long and there’s always something to talk about. Even with roughly two weeks left, it’s pretty wild to still see transactions, but here we are.
