The Philadelphia Phillies extended their winning streak to three series by defeating the Miami Marlins, and now they’ll face their division rivals, the New York Mets, as the playoffs draw near.
The Phillies and Mets have been in a tight race for the top spot in the National League East all season, but Philadelphia’s lead has now increased to seven games ahead of this upcoming series. Despite the high stakes, there was also a moment to reflect on the passing of a legendary figure who shaped both the Mets and the Phillies’ history.
Last week, former Mets World Series-winning manager Davey Johnson passed away at the age of 82. Johnson, who led the Mets to a championship in 1986, also mentored Bryce Harper during his early days with the Washington Nationals. On Sunday, Harper shared a heartfelt tribute to Johnson, acknowledging the important role he played in his career.

“He loved young players,” Harper said, per Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Bryce Harper was a highly anticipated teenager when he was called up to the Washington Nationals over 13 years ago. Since then, he’s lived up to the hype, becoming one of the most prolific power hitters in Major League Baseball. But as Harper reflected on Davey Johnson’s influence, he emphasized how important it was to have the legendary manager as a mentor during his rookie season. Harper believes that Johnson’s guidance played a significant role in shaping his future success.
“He gave me the opportunity to be a big leaguer,” Harper added, according to Lauber. “One of the funniest managers I’ve ever played for, and just a baseball guy, man. Definitely going to be missed in the baseball circle, and just an all-around great human.”
As the Phillies and Mets clash in the wake of Johnson’s passing, it’s clear that the legendary manager will be missed by players and fans on both sides.
