How slim are the margins for the Texas Rangers’ roster right now? Even the search for a backup innings eater turned into a thorough process.
Before Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros at Globe Life Field, the Rangers designated right-handed pitcher for assignment and called up right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Round Rock.
Boushley, who posted a 6.02 ERA over 28 appearances this season, threw 39 pitches in Saturday’s 11-0 loss to the Astros. With no remaining minor league options, he was designated for assignment and now has to pass through waivers before potentially being assigned to the minors or released.

This move cleared space for Edwards on the Rangers’ 40-man roster. The only other pitchers left on the 40-man roster were right-handers Marc Church (currently on a rehab assignment at High-A Hub City), Jose Corniell (who pitched on Saturday at Triple-A Round Rock), Kumar Rocker (who hasn’t pitched since August 7), Winston Santos (who has made only two appearances at Double-A Frisco after missing most of the season due to a back injury), and Emiliano Teodo.
Edwards, who the Rangers brought in on a minor league deal on July 22, was seen as an “experienced option” who was fresh and ready to step in if the team needed him on Sunday, according to manager Bruce Bochy. His most recent outing was on September 2, when he pitched five innings for Round Rock. Over 39 1/3 innings with the affiliate since signing, Edwards has posted a 5.31 ERA.
The Rangers originally drafted Edwards in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB Draft before trading him to the Chicago Cubs as part of a package for right-hander Matt Garza. Edwards has a solid 3.59 ERA in 298 MLB appearances and was a key part of the Cubs’ World Series championship in 2016.
