The St. Louis Cardinals made two exciting additions to their big league roster on Friday, but it came at the cost of placing two players on the Injured List.
On the positive side, the team’s No. 6 prospect, Jimmy Crooks, is getting the call-up to the majors alongside 26-year-old outfielder César Prieto. Crooks has had an impressive season so far, posting a .274/.337/.441 line with 14 home runs, 79 RBIs, 21 doubles, one triple, and 61 runs in 98 games. His performance has been especially strong in August, where he’s hit .337/.404/.518 with three home runs, 16 RBIs, and 10 walks over 21 games.

Crooks now is getting a chance in the big leagues in place of fellow catcher Yohel Pozo who was placed on the seven-day concussion list, per the team. On top of this, the Cardinals announced that Alec Burleson also has been played on the Injured List due to right wrist inflammation.
“Welcome to the show Jimmy and César! We have selected the contracts of C Jimmy Crooks and INF César Prieto from Memphis (AAA),” the Cardinals announced. “OF Alec Burleson has been placed on the 10-day IL (right wrist inflammation). C Yohel Pozo has been placed on the 7-day concussion list.”
Prieto has been impressive in Triple-A this season, putting up a solid .295/.359/.448 line in 107 games, with nine home runs, 62 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. He’ll take the place of Burleson, who’s also had a breakout year for the Cardinals.
Burleson has been one of the bright spots in the team’s lineup in 2025, enjoying the best season of his career with a .286/.337/.451 slash, 16 home runs, 60 RBIs, and 21 doubles over 122 games.
With these call-ups, the Cardinals are getting a glimpse at players who could make a significant impact in 2026. While it’s still uncertain where the team stands on Prieto, Crooks, one of the organization’s top prospects, could be a key part of their everyday lineup moving forward.
