Cardinals-Braves Summer Trade Has Confirmed Winner

After weeks of speculation, the St. Louis Cardinals finally made a bold move with their starting rotation ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline. Fans had been calling for the team to part ways with struggling veteran Erick Fedde, and on July 23rd, the Cardinals did just that, designating him for assignment. Instead of losing him for nothing, St. Louis traded him to the Atlanta Braves on July 27th for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

Now, just a month later, it’s clear who the winner of this trade is. Fedde made five appearances, including four starts, but posted a dismal 8.10 ERA. His struggles led to the Braves releasing him on Sunday, marking a swift end to his brief stint in Atlanta.

The Cardinals clearly made the right decision this summer

“The Braves today recalled RHP Wander Suero and RHP Hunter Stratton to Atlanta, placed LHP Aaron Bummer on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, and released RHP Erick Fedde from the roster,” the Braves announced.

The Cardinals didn’t get much in return for Erick Fedde, but they managed to move him before his struggles spiraled further. Fedde started the 2025 season with a 5.22 ERA over 20 starts with St. Louis. Last year, after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox, he posted a solid 3.72 ERA in 10 starts, following a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts with Chicago.

St. Louis brought Fedde in last summer as a potential contributor during a playoff push, and because he was under team control at an affordable price for 2025. However, things didn’t pan out as planned. The Cardinals missed the playoffs last season and ultimately moved on from him this year.

While the Cardinals’ rotation still has its uncertainties, particularly with Miles Mikolas, the decision to part ways with Fedde now seems like the right call, especially after the Braves released him.
