The Cincinnati Reds announced that right-handed reliever has been released following a string of rough outings that raised concerns about his consistency on the mound.
Mey, 24, has struggled to find his footing in the majors this season, posting a 7.36 ERA over 18 appearances. Known for his high-velocity fastball and potential as a late-inning arm, Mey has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled with command and control, leading to walks and costly runs in key situations.
Mey’s demotion clears a spot in the bullpen, and the Reds are expected to call up a fresh arm ahead of their upcoming weekend series. The team remains in the thick of a tight National League Central race, and consistency from the bullpen is seen as a key factor down the stretch.
The Reds originally signed Mey out of the Dominican Republic in 2018. He impressed in the minors with a powerful fastball that touches triple digits and a developing slider, quickly climbing the organizational ranks.
For now, he’ll head to Louisville with the goal of refining his mechanics and regaining confidence.
