Insider reveals why Cardinals didn't trade Nolan Arenado image

No-trade clauses are arguably one of the biggest obstacles in Major League Baseball for teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, especially when they have high-priced players they need to trade.

For Nolan Arenado, this issue came up once more.

A recent report from MLB.com’s John Denton revealed that this issue surfaced around the trade deadline. Denton mentioned that Arenado had a conversation with the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, before the deadline. However, Arenado wasn’t willing to budge on his position regarding where he was open to being traded.

“All indications are that 3B Nolan Arenado will remain with the Cardinals through today’s deadline, per a source familiar with the negotiations. Arenado met recently with POBO John Mozeliak and there has been no change in the list of teams he would accept a trade to as of now,” Denton shared.

During the offseason, the Cardinals thought they had a shot at trading Arenado to the Houston Astros. The deal appeared to be almost finalized, but Arenado ultimately used his no-trade clause to block the move.

This is just one of the many concerns the front office faces as they try to trade him, and there are several other factors to consider.

For example, the Astros made a move for Carlos Correa at the trade deadline, which now rules them out as a potential destination for Arenado.

As other teams continue to improve, the trade landscape could change, potentially forcing the Cardinals to keep Arenado for the remainder of his contract.
