The Cincinnati Reds have been without their ace, Hunter Greene, for over a month, yet they’ve managed to remain competitive in the tough National League. Terry Francona’s squad appears to be fully committed this season, as shown by their bold move to fast-track Chase Burns to the majors in an effort to win now.
However, the team isn’t quite the same without Greene. They’re missing an ace who can go toe-to-toe with the league’s top pitchers. While Andrew Abbott has been stellar this season, he’d be even more effective as the No. 2 behind Greene.
Earlier this month, Greene was scheduled for a rehab start but faced a setback with his groin and back injuries. Recently, though, the Reds’ manager revealed that Greene is now set to take a significant step toward returning to Cincinnati.

Francona recently announced that Greene will start his rehab assignment early next week, beginning with a single start at the Arizona Complex League before moving on to Triple-A, as reported by Reds insider Charlie Goldsmith.
While the team will likely proceed with caution given Greene’s importance, this news is a big sigh of relief for Reds fans.
Greene’s return couldn’t come at a better time. The Reds are expected to cautiously pursue trades at the deadline, and with Greene back in the fold, they could quietly position themselves as contenders for a playoff spot in the NL.
It will be a tough road for the Reds to break into the postseason with the level of talent in their league, but having Greene back on the mound gives them a genuine shot to surprise everyone and make a run at October baseball.
