Major Roster Shakeup: Rangers Leave Key Pitcher out of Starting Rotation

The Texas Rangers did include an All-Star in their starting rotation for their series against the Detroit Tigers, but it wasn’t the one selected for this year.

The Rangers opted to keep Jacob deGrom, who made this year’s All-Star Game, out of the rotation, using the chance to give him extra rest before the second half of the season. Texas announced the probable starters via their PR account on social media.

The 37-year-old is 9-2 with a 2.32 ERA with 113 strikeouts and 24 walks in 112.1 innings in 19 starts.

Jacob deGrom, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 — his second such procedure — has already made more starts this season than in any year since 2019. Both deGrom and the Rangers have emphasized the importance of maintaining his health and providing extra rest whenever possible.

Signing Jacob deGrom Was a Mistake, but the Rangers Can Still Win It All

Although deGrom didn’t pitch in the All-Star Game, his most recent start was on Saturday in Houston. With the rotation now set, the earliest he would return to the mound is Monday against the Athletics, giving him over a week to rest.

By skipping deGrom’s start, the Rangers deprived fans of a potential showdown between him and reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. Skubal, who started the All-Star Game for the AL, is scheduled to pitch on Sunday against the Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi, who also made the All-Star team in 2023.
