The Buffalo Sabres face several major roster decisions this offseason, and according to recent reports, they’re now considering either trading or buying out defenseman Mattias Samuelsson.
Following the conclusion of the 2024–25 season, the Sabres have been heavily linked to potential trades involving JJ Peterka and standout blueliner Bowen Byram—both of whom are reportedly on the move this summer.
Samuelsson may soon join that list, as the team is reportedly open to parting ways with the young defenseman through either a trade or a buyout, signaling a broader reshuffling of the Sabres’ defensive core.
That report originates from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, who notes that the Sabres are actively exploring options to move on from 25-year-old defenseman Mattias Samuelsson — a surprising development given he’s coming off arguably his best season in Buffalo. Despite the team’s struggles, Samuelsson posted 14 points and a +4 rating in 2024–25, a solid performance on an otherwise underwhelming roster.
Adding to the uncertainty, there’s growing speculation that the Sabres could also consider trading Owen Power if the right offer materializes. With names like Rasmus Andersson reportedly available on the trade market, it appears Buffalo may be eyeing a shake-up — and possibly an upgrade — on the blue line.
Despite posting a career-high 14 points last season, Mattias Samuelsson remains under contract for the next five years with a \$4.285 million cap hit — a sizable commitment for a player who may not project as a top-pair defenseman. With the Sabres reportedly aiming to be aggressive in reshaping their roster, Samuelsson could become a useful trade chip, particularly in deals where salary matching is necessary.
While once seen as a key piece of the team’s future, the former second-round pick may not develop into the star the organization had hoped for — and it seems Buffalo is coming to terms with that. Don’t be surprised if they move on from him one way or another this offseason.
