Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington commended starting pitcher Jose Soriano for his outstanding performance, as he held the New York Yankees scoreless over seven innings in the Angels’ 4-0 victory on Tuesday.
“It’s gonna take more time, but he has developed,” Washington said. “He has shown back-to-back days that he had the ball, the consistency of what he could do. Now he’s just got to start sustaining it. We always knew he had good stuff, and he’s only in the second year of starting, so there’s still a lot for him to learn. But I tell you what, he has it.”
In 2024, Soriano transitioned to a full-time starter, though his season was limited to just 20 starts due to injury setbacks. Despite that, he pitched 113 innings with an impressive 3.42 ERA, the best among Angels’ starters. His 121 ERA+ also topped the rotation.
This season, Soriano has arguably taken his game to the next level. Even with a slightly higher ERA of 3.54, he’s been dominant. He currently leads MLB in home runs allowed per nine innings at just 0.3, and ranks second in his rotation with 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
On Tuesday against the Yankees, Soriano delivered another stellar performance, tossing seven shutout innings while giving up six hits and striking out six. This marked his second straight outing of seven innings, having done the same against the Athletics on June 10, where he allowed just two hits and one run while striking out 12 in the Angels’ 2-1 victory.
This season, Soriano has gone past the sixth inning in eight starts, surrendering only five runs in those outings. Impressively, all eight of those starts have been quality ones for the right-hander.
The Angels will hope Soriano can remain healthy this season, as they have used just five starters all year and are pursuing a postseason spot. The Angels sit seven games back in the AL West and are just two games under .500, which is good for third in the division. After taking a four game series against the Yankees, the Halos face off against the first-place Astros at the Big A on Friday at 6:38 p.m. PT.
