BAD DECISION: Cardinals ‘Win-Win’ Proposal To Cut Ties With 25-year-old Prolific Slugger

The St. Louis Cardinals have a power hitter on their roster with immense potential, but his playing time has been inconsistent.

A 25-year-old slugger for the Cardinals, has had an up-and-down start to his MLB career. In 2023, during his second season in the majors, he hit 27 home runs and drove in 76 runs over just 119 games. While his power is undeniable, he’s struggled with strikeouts and getting on base, which has affected his role with the team. Last season, he managed 19 home runs but appeared in only 107 games.

With Jordan Walker currently sidelined, Gorman has seen increased opportunities at the plate. However, once Walker returns, Gorman may once again find his at-bats limited.

The Cardinals now face a decision on how to handle his situation. Thomas Gauvain of FanSided suggested a “win-win” trade that would send Gorman to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for pitcher Reid Detmers.

“Both Nolan Gorman and Reid Detmers fit the profile of players who might benefit from a change of scenery,” Gauvain noted. Detmers, a former top-100 prospect who’s also 25, has posted a 5.60 ERA in 24 appearances this season. Still, he hasn’t given up a run in his last nine outings since May 20 and has recently served as the Angels’ closer, earning saves on June 3, 6, and 7.

On the Cardinals’ side, Gorman was expected to get a full season’s worth of at-bats in 2024 to prove himself. But over a third into the season, he’s on pace for under 300 plate appearances and has slipped in the team’s depth chart. Time may be running out for manager Oliver Marmol to give him a consistent role.

Should the Cardinals explore the possibility of turning this trade idea into reality?
