The Los Angeles Angels narrowly defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Friday, boosting their season record to 29-33. The victory moved the Angels into third place in the American League West, trailing the second-place Mariners by just three games.
Kyle Hendricks started for Los Angeles and turned in a steady performance, pitching six innings and giving up four earned runs. The game also marked a major career achievement for Hendricks, as he earned his 100th win in the majors.
The Angels posted a congratulatory message for their veteran pitcher, saying: “Congratulations to Kyle Hendricks on recording his 100th career win!”
The 35-year-old right-hander now holds a 3-6 record with a 5.40 ERA this season. His last win came on May 20 against the Athletics.
Los Angeles rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the fifth inning. Chris Taylor tied the game with a double that drove in Jo Adell, then Nolan Schanuel followed with a single to bring Taylor home and give the Angels the lead.
Hendricks’ journey to 100 wins started when he was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He was traded in 2012 and made his big-league debut on July 10, 2014, with the Chicago Cubs. He played for the Cubs through the 2024 season, helping them win the 2016 World Series while leading the league in ERA that season.
Hendricks has recorded four seasons with at least 11 wins, highlighted by a career-best 16 victories in 2016. However, he’s coming off a tough final season with the Cubs, where he went 4-12 with a 5.92 ERA.
The Angels will conclude their weekend series against the Mariners on Sunday, then return home to host the Athletics for a three-game series beginning Monday night.
