Chicago Cubs reportedly confirm another significant addition to bolster depth

The Chicago Cubs have signed talented reliever, formerly of the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman. He became a free agent after being placed on waivers by the Mets. In his short stint with New York, he pitched in six games, recording a 3.52 ERA and allowing just one home run.

Cabrera returns to familiar ground in the NL Central, where he spent four and a half seasons with the Cardinals before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023.

Former New York Mets reliever signs with Chicago Cubs

While he initially showed potential in St. Louis, his performance declined in his last two seasons there, with ERAs of 4.63 in 2022 and 5.06 in 2023. After the trade to Toronto, Cabrera rebounded with a 2.66 ERA, though it rose to 3.59 the following year. He joined the Mets this offseason and started in Triple-A before injuries on the roster led to a call-up.

Cabrera performed well in limited appearances for the Mets but was ultimately waived. The Cubs, dealing with a struggling bullpen, picked him up to add experience and depth. It’s unclear whether he’ll start in the majors or minors, but his MLB track record offers valuable support for a Cubs relief unit that has been a weak spot this season.
