MAJOR BREAKING: NHL Drop Huge but Surprising Trade Rumor

Florida Panthers star is wrapping up a four-year, $17.7 million contract.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, the 28-year-old has chosen the perfect time to hit peak form. the receiver just completed his most productive regular season with 51 points and continues to build his reputation as a reliable playoff performer. He’s currently tied with Mikko Rantanen for the most goals in the postseason (nine), putting him in the running for the Conn Smythe Trophy.

The Panthers reportedly resumed contract talks with Bennett in March. While he may be open to re-signing, he could seek a significant raise—possibly doubling his current $4.425 million annual salary—which might push him out of Florida’s price range.

If Bennett enters free agency, he’d likely be the top center available, attracting interest from multiple teams.

One potential suitor is the Toronto Maple Leafs. Michael Traikos noted they could have over $22 million in cap space if they let Mitch Marner and John Tavares walk. He and Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun both suggested Toronto could target Bennett if he hits the open market.

Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic sees Bennett as an ideal fit for the St. Louis Blues to fill their second-line center need. However, with limited cap space, the Blues might have to make room—possibly by putting defenseman Torey Krug on long-term injured reserve if he’s unable to return.

Rutherford’s colleague Kevin Kurz pointed to the Philadelphia Flyers as another possible destination. They’re focused on strengthening their center depth and have a projected $26.7 million in cap space for 2025–26, giving them flexibility to make an offer.

Bennett may also appeal to the Montreal Canadiens. Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette listed him among several UFA targets to fill their second-line center void.
