The New York Yankees might entertain the idea of trading Anthony Volpe following his underwhelming showing in the Subway Series. Jake Elman of Yahoo Sports has floated the idea that Atlanta Braves infielder Ozzie Albies could be a realistic trade target in such a scenario.
Volpe has drawn mixed reactions from Yankees fans due to his inconsistent defense and uneven performance at the plate. His recent strikeout against the Mets reignited speculation among fans and analysts about whether the team should explore alternatives at shortstop.
Elman argues that Albies, a three-time All-Star, could be a compelling option despite his own struggles this season. “Albies, a career Brave, is batting .225 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 47 games,” Elman notes. “The 28-year-old has a 0.2 bWAR and a career-low .616 OPS over 204 plate appearances. With the Braves finding their rhythm, a bold trade might be in the cards.”
However, parting with Volpe wouldn’t be without risk. He’s under team control through 2028, and the Yankees lack reliable depth at shortstop. A recent injury to Oswaldo Cabrera—who had been floated as a possible replacement—complicates things further.
Despite some defensive concerns, the 24-year-old Volpe currently ranks second on the team in bWAR (1.5), trailing only Aaron Judge. The Yankees have invested heavily in him, both emotionally and professionally. A New York native and lifelong fan of the team, Volpe was their first-round pick in 2019 and won a Gold Glove as a rookie shortstop in 2023.
Elman emphasizes that there’s no real trade buzz involving Albies or Volpe, but suggests the idea is intriguing and could work out well for both clubs.
