Over the past few months, Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier has been actively reshaping the team’s roster-building approach. One of the most notable moves was bringing in former Atlanta Falcons salary cap expert Nick Polk as the football program’s general manager, working alongside Jacob LaFrance, the current general manager of personnel.
However, the team experienced a significant personnel loss on Monday with the departure of Director of College Personnel Bird Sherrill, who is joining the New York Jets.

According to Mark Long of the Associated Press, Sherrill played a key role in Florida’s recent transfer portal successes. Since joining the program before the 2022 season, he’s been instrumental in bringing in impactful players such as first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, fourth-rounder Chimere Dike, and fifth-rounder Cam Jackson.
Sherrill’s departure is a tough blow for the Gators. While they haven’t relied heavily on the transfer portal, their strategic and selective approach has proven effective—highlighted by the recent addition of safety Harold Stubbs IV.
Sherrill’s jump to the NFL isn’t entirely unexpected. Before his time in Gainesville, he spent six years with the Detroit Lions as part of their scouting department.
Florida will now need to find a replacement during the offseason, but it remains to be seen whether the new hire can match Sherrill’s knack for identifying talent through the portal. His exit could end up being a significant setback for Napier and his staff.
