Pete Alonso didn’t hold back. After a costly throwing error in the eighth inning sparked a meltdown in the Mets’ 8-2 loss to the Yankees, the All-Star first baseman took full responsibility for the mistake.

“I messed it up,” Alonso said. “I just made an awful throw. That whole inning, this game, it’s on me. After that throw, the momentum got out of hand. They had really good at-bats. This one’s on me. It stinks.”
With the Subway Series finale tied 2-2, the Mets seemed on track to escape the eighth inning unscathed. But when rookie Jorbit Vivas hit a chopper to Pete Alonso with runners on second and third, Jasson Domínguez took off for home. Alonso had a clear shot at him but overthrew the ball, allowing the go-ahead run to score. From there, things unraveled quickly.
Yankees slugger Paul Goldschmidt followed with an RBI single, and then Cody Bellinger stepped up and launched a grand slam off Genesis Cabrera—his ninth career slam—sealing the game for the Yankees. What had been a tight, well-pitched contest suddenly turned into a six-run inning, and with it, the Yankees clinched the series.
