The Oklahoma Sooners have secured a major commitment through the transfer portal, landing former five-star edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr., as reported by Pete Nakos of On3.
Jones began his college career with the Georgia Bulldogs before transferring to the Florida State Seminoles for the 2024 season. He was ranked as the No. 2 edge rusher in the 2022 recruiting class by 247Sports.
In his only season with the Seminoles, Jones totaled 25 tackles, six tackles for loss, and four sacks over 11 games. Pro Football Focus also credited him with 16 pressures during the season.
This marked an improvement over his time at Georgia, where he played two seasons and recorded just 16 tackles, six tackles for loss, and two sacks combined.
Across his three years in college football, Jones has played 690 snaps.
He was previously on the Sooners’ radar under former defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and assistant Jamar Cain. Despite a coaching change, Jones initially joined the Bulldogs, who were defending national champions at the time. However, Brent Venables also recruited Jones when he was the defensive coordinator at Clemson.
Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 255 pounds, Jones has impressive size and athleticism for the edge rusher position. He is expected to be an immediate contributor to a defensive line that has become a team strength. With the Sooners losing experienced edge players like Ethan Downs, Trace Ford, and Caiden Woullard, the team will now lean on the development of Adepoju Adebawore, Danny Okoye, Taylor Wein, Nigel Smith, Wyatt Gilmore, C.J. Nickson, and Alexander Shieldknight. In the meantime, Jones adds valuable college experience and production to the defensive line rotation.
