HUGE BLOW: South Carolina Gamecocks Lose Another Elite In State Prospect To Clemson..

The South Carolina Gamecocks are actively building their 2026 recruiting class, but they just missed out on a major in-state target. Four-star safety Kentavion Anderson announced his commitment to the Clemson Tigers, choosing the in-state rival over several other Power Five programs.

Anderson, ranked No. 119 nationally and the No. 10 safety in the class according to composite rankings, is also the second-highest-rated player in South Carolina. Back in February, he released a top six that included Clemson, South Carolina, Kentucky, Michigan, Virginia, and Indiana.

The Gamecocks were hoping to pair Anderson in the secondary with current commit J’Zavien Currence, a standout cornerback who headlines their 2026 class. While Anderson has now pledged to Clemson, South Carolina will likely keep the door open for future contact while evaluating other options for the defensive backfield.

Byrnes played Dorman in the first round of the Region 2-AAAAA playoffs at Byrnes High School's Nixon Field on Nov. 3, 2023. Dorman's Kentavion Anderson (25) tries to run down Byrnes' Armoni Weaver (2) on a play.

Currently, South Carolina’s 2026 class features five commits:

  • J’Zavien Currence, CB

  • Zyon Guiles, OL

  • Keenan Britt, EDGE

  • Jamel Howse, TE

  • Anthony Baxter, IOL

Though the list is still small, the class is expected to grow significantly this summer. With official visits ramping up, June and July will be crucial months for the Gamecocks to make key additions and build momentum on the recruiting trail.
