Over the past year and a half, few players have been more frequently linked to the Philadelphia Phillies than Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
However, instead of pulling the trigger on a trade for Robert, the Phillies have opted to explore other options, making smaller moves to address their needs. Despite bringing in players like Max Kepler and Austin Hays, it’s clear the Phillies haven’t yet found their ideal fit.
There’s also reason to question whether Robert would be the answer. Despite his injury struggles, he hasn’t exactly been performing at an elite level when healthy. Currently, he’s batting just .186 with 47 strikeouts in 129 at-bats. His career numbers also don’t scream “superstar,” with a career OPS+ of 114—good, but not enough to make him one of MLB’s top players.
Regardless, Robert would still be a better fit with the Phillies than on another team, especially considering their need for help in the outfield—something they can’t ignore.
However, a recent report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today reveals that the New York Mets are now in the mix for Robert. Nightengale noted, “The Chicago White Sox finally are starting to get some inquiries on center fielder Luis Robert, with the New York Mets recently among the teams checking in and showing interest.”
While the Phillies have a stronger farm system than the Mets, it’s unclear which prospects either team would be willing to trade for Robert, especially since the White Sox are reportedly hoping for a huge return.
If the Phillies are serious about acquiring him, they certainly have the assets to make a deal. But if the Mets are more aggressive in pursuing him, Philadelphia could find itself in a tricky situation.
