Red Sox President Breaks Silence on Future of Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer

Given all the injuries the Boston Red Sox have faced—most recently with Triston Casas—the team will soon need to make decisions about promoting some of their top prospects.

It doesn’t quite add up for highly regarded prospects like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer to remain in Triple-A for long. When performing at their best, they rank among the top talents in all of Major League Baseball.

Despite this, the Red Sox maintain that the timing isn’t right just yet.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, team president Sam Kennedy acknowledged that their debut could be imminent—potentially just one injury away—even though he hopes that doesn’t happen.

“Excited to get them up here when the time is right,” Kennedy told NESN’s Tom Caron on Wednesday. “You hate to say this, knock on wood, cross your toes. You’re just one injury away from big moves being made. Things happen sooner rather than later. Sometimes when guys go down with injury and when guys are playing at the level that they’re playing at, you’d expect to see them relatively soon.”

Offensively, the Red Sox haven’t struggled for most of the season—they’ve been solid, though there’s still room for improvement. The lineup has shown potential.

Bringing in a hitter like Roman Anthony or Marcelo Mayer would provide a notable boost.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Sox will choose to debut them around the same time, but either way, at least one of them should be making their way to Fenway in the near future.
