Geno Auriemma has built a powerhouse with the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team.
The program recently celebrated another national championship, driven by Auriemma and standout players Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd.
Following the title win, Bueckers entered the WNBA, getting drafted first overall by the Dallas Wings, concluding her four-year career at UConn.
As Bueckers begins her professional career, Auriemma took a moment to reflect on her influence on the Huskies’ success.
While he expressed deep admiration for Bueckers, Auriemma also offered a humorous take, likening her to Dennis the Menace—the mischievous comic-strip character.
“You know, charming, cute kid, means well, but just cannot help themselves,” Auriemma said, per Sean Gregory at Time Magazine. “They have to do something on the court, off the court, say something to let you know that there’s some mischief lurking in there.”
While Paige Bueckers may not be celebrated for her defense and has occasionally struggled with efficiency—something Geno Auriemma has openly addressed—she remains a dynamic offensive force.
Bueckers is widely regarded as one of the most gifted offensive talents in women’s basketball, excelling as both a scorer and a playmaker.
In her final season at UConn, she averaged 19.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.
She capped off her college career in dominant fashion, leading the Huskies to a commanding 82-59 victory over South Carolina in the national championship game.
