Matt Rhule, Nebraska football, land 4-star QB in jaw-dropping recruiting win over Bret Bielema

Nebraska football fans finally have reason to celebrate, as head coach Matt Rhule landed his quarterback of the future on Thursday: Trae Taylor, a 6-foot-3, 186-pound four-star prospect from Mundelein, Illinois, committed to the Cornhuskers’ 2027 class.

Taylor made his announcement during a live appearance on 247Sports’ YouTube channel at Carmel Catholic High School, surrounded by friends, family, and teammates. He ultimately chose Nebraska over offers from Illinois, LSU, and Texas A&M.

In a twist during the ceremony, Taylor initially reached for an Illinois hat—even saying he was “home”—before discarding it in favor of a Cornhuskers cap, adding drama to the moment.

When asked why he picked Nebraska, Taylor highlighted the authenticity of the coaching staff.

“Coach Rhule and Coach [Glenn] Thomas have been genuine throughout,” Taylor said. “I believe they can help me grow both on and off the field and prepare me for the next level—the NFL.”

He didn’t hold back in expressing confidence in his new team, stating, “We’ve got the best fans in the nation,” and promised Husker Nation he would continue working hard through the rest of his high school career.

Taylor, who has one season of starting experience at Carmel Catholic, is already ranked No. 7 among quarterbacks in the 2027 class and No. 4 overall in Illinois, according to 247Sports.

His commitment sends a strong message: Nebraska isn’t just aiming for bowl appearances—they want to contend for College Football Playoff relevance in the coming years.

While the decision was a tough blow for his other finalists—especially Illinois, who hoped to keep the in-state talent—there’s still plenty of time left in the recruiting cycle for programs to regroup.
