Spencer Petras didn’t have an especially impressive career at Iowa, finishing with 24 touchdown passes and 19 interceptions over 37 games from 2018 to 2022.
Despite his underwhelming college stats, Petras has surprisingly landed a significant NFL opportunity: he’s been invited to participate in rookie minicamps with both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Of the two, Kansas City stands out as the more prestigious destination, having claimed three Super Bowl titles and made five appearances in the championship game over the past six seasons. While there’s no shot of Petras unseating Patrick Mahomes, the mere chance to audition for the Chiefs is remarkable considering his limited success in college.
After transferring from Iowa in 2022, Petras played at Utah State, where he showed improvement—throwing for 2,315 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while completing 65.4% of his passes last season.

His best campaign at Iowa came in 2021, when he passed for 1,880 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions, completing just over 57% of his attempts.
A native of San Rafael, California, Petras is part of a string of Iowa quarterbacks who have struggled to meet expectations in recent years. However, the program hopes that changes in 2025 with the arrival of Mark Gronowski, a South Dakota State transfer and former Walter Payton Award winner, who could finally bring stability to the position.
