The St. Louis Cardinals made a smart move ahead of the 2024 season by bringing Lance Lynn back into the fold.
After a tough 2023, it was clear St. Louis needed to bolster its pitching staff. Lynn quickly agreed to return and delivered a solid performance, posting a 3.84 ERA over 23 starts—his best mark since his All-Star 2021 season when he recorded a 2.69 ERA in 28 outings. He came at a reasonable cost and provided veteran stability.
Though he had a strong showing last season, Lynn didn’t secure a new contract in free agency and ultimately decided to retire. Speaking on MLB Network, he shared how much it meant to finish his career where it began.

“It meant a lot,” Lynn said. “That’s a big part of why I retired. If this was going to be my last season, I couldn’t see it happening anywhere else. When I thought about what I accomplished—2,000 innings, 2,000 strikeouts, and hitting personal milestones with the Cardinals—it just felt right to end it here.”
Lynn wrapped up a 13-year MLB career with a 3.74 ERA over 364 appearances, playing for the Cardinals, Twins, Yankees, Rangers, White Sox, and Dodgers. Returning to St. Louis for his final season turned out to be the perfect sendoff.
