One of the top priorities for the Los Angeles Rams during the 2025 offseason has been strengthening the linebacker corps. Although they added Nate Landman in free agency, the team also saw the departures of Christian Rozeboom and Jake Hummel. Recently, the Rams announced they are bringing back linebacker Troy Reeder.
Following the trade that sent Ernest Jones to the Tennessee Titans, Reeder stepped into a starting role alongside Rozeboom. He started the first six games of the 2024 season before being placed on injured reserve, with Omar Speights stepping in as his replacement. In that span, Reeder logged the most snaps among Rams linebackers and recorded 46 tackles.
Despite the team’s need at linebacker, the decision to re-sign Reeder has raised some eyebrows. Given Landman’s similar play style—strong against the run but limited in pass coverage—many assumed Reeder wouldn’t return. Additionally, Landman has familiarity with Raheem Morris’s defensive scheme from their time together in Atlanta.
Reeder originally parted ways with the Rams in 2022 but rejoined the practice squad in 2023. He made the active roster at the beginning of last season and now returns once more. While he brings experience to a relatively young linebacker unit, the Rams’ ongoing commitment to Reeder is somewhat puzzling, especially considering he likely wouldn’t make the roster on most other teams.
As the draft approaches, the Rams are still expected to target at least one linebacker to bolster the group around Speights. Reeder’s return doesn’t eliminate the possibility of drafting at the position, but it might reduce the urgency to take multiple players. Instead, the team could opt for a single linebacker in the mid-to-late rounds.
