Virginia’s impressive run of landing transfer guards may have hit a snag. According to Tobias Bass of The Athletic, talented transfer guard has reportedly backed out of his commitment to UVA. Bass, who initially broke the news of Miles’ commitment on Monday (April 7), shared the update on Friday afternoon (April 11). Miles’ decision to decommit comes shortly after the Cavaliers secured another veteran transfer guard, Dallin Hall from BYU, who is expected to contend for the starting point guard role next season.
The recent developments in Virginia basketball recruiting highlight the evolving dynamics of the transfer portal era. During the NCAA-mandated dead period from April 3rd to 10th—when in-person contact between coaches and recruits is prohibited—Virginia managed to secure five transfer commitments in just five days. Interestingly, it appears none of those players visited UVA prior to committing. While no official details have been confirmed, it’s reasonable to infer that NIL opportunities likely played a significant role in those decisions.

Among those initial commitments was Oklahoma guard transfer Duke Miles, who has since decided to decommit. This change came shortly after Virginia landed BYU transfer guard Dallin Hall, who brings considerable experience and could contend for the starting point guard role. It’s possible that Hall’s addition, along with speculation about other potential guard transfers, influenced Miles’ decision to reopen his recruitment.
Miles brings substantial experience, having played in 116 career games with 86 starts across stints at Troy, High Point, and Oklahoma. At Oklahoma this past season, he started all 34 games, averaging 9.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game, playing alongside standout freshman Jeremiah Fears. With one year of eligibility remaining, it’s understandable that Miles is focused on finding the best opportunity to lead a team as its primary point guard.
With Miles stepping away, Virginia’s transfer class now includes four players, and the team currently has seven projected scholarship players for the 2025–2026 season:
Returners:
-
G Elijah Gertrude
Freshmen Additions:
-
G Chance Mallory
-
F Silas Barksdale
Transfer Additions:
-
G Sam Lewis (Toledo)
-
G Jacari White (North Dakota State)
-
F Martin Carrere (VCU)
-
G Dallin Hall (BYU)
With several roster spots still open, Virginia is expected to remain active in the portal. The Cavaliers are set to host Kansas freshman transfer Rakease Passmore for a visit on Friday and are also reportedly pursuing Florida State forward transfer Malique Ewin and Milwaukee forward transfer Jamichael Stillwell.
