The UNC basketball program has officially landed its first addition of the 2025 offseason cycle.
After a Zoom meeting with the North Carolina staff on Tuesday, West Virginia transfer quickly decided that Chapel Hill would be his next destination. His commitment was announced later that night, with Joe Tipton of On3 and Inside Carolina being the first to report the news.
Standing at 6-foot-6, Powell had several options but ultimately chose North Carolina over his other two finalists, Ole Miss and Ohio State. He will join the Tar Heels with three years of college eligibility remaining.

Powell, who primarily started, averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He had standout performances during his freshman season, including two games where he scored a season-high 17 points. Notably, he led all Big 12 freshmen with 64 three-pointers made, an asset that will benefit the Tar Heels in the future.
His size and athleticism make him versatile enough to play multiple positions. While Powell may not be considered one of the top transfer prospects, he has the potential to be a valuable addition to the UNC basketball team.
Tar Heels fans can celebrate this commitment, but the work isn’t over yet, as the hope is that more transfers will join the team in the coming weeks.
