It’s been a few weeks since the Virginia Tech men’s basketball season wrapped up, and five players have entered the transfer portal. This marks the second consecutive year that head coach Mike Young will be focused on rebuilding his roster for the upcoming season.
The Hokies have several areas of need, but with a larger NIL package, expect Young to be proactive during this portal window. Just last week, he posted on the Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball X account, expressing his commitment to quickly turning things around.
The number of players entering the portal is growing rapidly, providing schools with an expanding pool of talent to choose from. Some players have already been linked to the Hokies, and here are four of them:

Robert McCray V – Jacksonville
Robert McCray, a guard for Jacksonville, is a player that Young and his staff had a close look at in November. The Dolphins handed Virginia Tech one of their more painful non-conference losses of the season, a 74-64 victory. McCray had an impressive performance with 17 points, four rebounds, and eight assists in that game. This season, he averaged 16.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game over 29.7 minutes. Pairing McCray with Ben Hammond in the backcourt would present a tough matchup for opponents, and he would give the Hokies another ball handler to create opportunities for Jaden Schutt. McCray is certainly a player to keep an eye on in the portal.
Kezza Giffa – High Point
Kezza Giffa, a guard from High Point, is another player drawing significant attention in the portal. The Paris native averaged 14.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game this season, leading his team to the NCAA Tournament. In the tournament, Giffa contributed eight points, three assists, and three rebounds in a first-round loss to Purdue. As a skilled ball handler, Giffa would be a great fit for the Hokies’ backcourt, though he’s also being pursued by several other programs, with only one year of eligibility remaining.
Themus Fulks – Milwaukee
Themus Fulks, a guard from Milwaukee, is a dynamic playmaker who has one season of eligibility left after this year. He averaged 14.6 points, 3 rebounds, and 5.9 assists this season. Fulks has moved through the portal after starting at South Carolina State and then transferring to Louisiana. Similar to McCray, Fulks is another talented guard that the Hokies could use. He excels at attacking the basket, shooting from long range, and has a strong basketball IQ. Coming off a standout season in the Horizon League, he is highly sought after in the portal, and Young will face stiff competition for his commitment.
