Hubert Davis UNC basketball program Host a Unique Shooting guard in transfer portal

The transfer portal is becoming crucial for the North Carolina Tar Heels as they navigate a pivotal offseason, working to fill significant roster gaps. With RJ Davis and Jae’Lyn Withers finishing their eligibility and Elliot Cadeau and Jalen Washington entering the transfer portal, the team’s list of needs has expanded.

As the dead period approaches, the Tar Heels are set to meet with a key transfer portal prospect this week.

According to Joe Tipton, West Virginia guard Jonathan Powell will connect with North Carolina via Zoom on Tuesday, followed by a meeting with Ole Miss on Wednesday.

Tipton also mentions that Powell recently wrapped up an official visit to Ohio State on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-6 shooting guard is entering his sophomore year after a freshman season where he averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 assists per game, shooting 37.8 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from beyond the arc. Powell appeared in 32 games and started 23 for the Mountaineers.

While the Tar Heels have already hosted one guard and are exploring other prospects, they have yet to secure a commitment from the transfer portal.
