Oklahoma Sooners Land Transfer Quarterback John Mateer, Boosting Depth at Key Position
The Oklahoma Sooners have secured a significant addition to their quarterback room, as transfer quarterback John Mateer has signed with the program. Mateer, a former Washington State Cougar, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Sooners’ offense.
Mateer, a 6’2″ quarterback from Spokane, Washington, started 10 games for Washington State last season, throwing for 2,852 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also showed his mobility, rushing for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Sooners’ coaching staff is excited about the addition of Mateer, who is expected to make an immediate impact. “John is a talented quarterback with a strong arm and excellent decision-making skills,” said Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables. “We’re thrilled to have him join our program and compete for the starting job.”

Mateer’s familiarity with Oklahoma’s new offensive system, which is similar to the one he played in at Washington State, should help him get up to speed quickly. He’s expected to compete with incumbent quarterback Dillon Gabriel for the starting job, and his addition should provide a boost to the Sooners’ quarterback depth.
The Sooners’ offense has been looking to rebound from a disappointing season last year, and the addition of Mateer should provide a spark. With his experience and talent, Mateer is poised to make a significant impact in Norman.
Oklahoma’s spring practice is set to begin soon, and Mateer is expected to be fully integrated into the team by then. The Sooners’ coaching staff is eager to see him in action and compete for the starting job.
