This year, the number of West Virginia baseball alumni on Opening Day rosters will be smaller due to the unfortunate injuries of Alek Manoah (elbow) and Michael Grove (shoulder). However, there is one former Mountaineer who is making a strong impression heading into the new season: Victor Scott II.
Earlier this week, St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol named Scott as the team’s starting center fielder for the 2025 season after a standout spring training.
In 16 spring games, Scott hit 15-for-43 (.349), smashing four home runs and driving in seven RBIs. He also walked eight times, leading to an on-base percentage of .451.

Scott quickly rose through the Cardinals’ minor league system but faced challenges at the plate during his rookie season. He posted a rough .179 average, going 26-for-145, and struck out 42 times with just six walks. Given Scott’s potential on the base paths, the Cardinals need him to get on base more, a skill he improved during spring training.
The Cardinals will begin their 2025 season on Thursday evening against the Minnesota Twins, with the first pitch set for 4:15 p.m. ET.
