The Boston Red Sox announced today that they have released veteran right-handed pitcher, parting ways with the 38-year-old reliever after two seasons with the team.
A well-regarded bullpen presence with over 13 years of Major League Baseball experience, joined the Red Sox in 2023 and contributed to the team with his signature slider and gritty approach on the mound. In his tenure with Boston, Ottavino appeared in 121 games, recording a 3.12 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 130 innings.
The decision to release him comes as the Red Sox continue to refine their roster for the upcoming season. With a deep bullpen already in place, the club has opted to move forward with younger options and perhaps pursue additional reinforcements ahead of Opening Day.
Ottavino, known for his work as both a setup man and closer throughout his career, has played for several teams, including the Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, and New York Mets. His potent fastball and devastating slider have made him a trusted weapon in late-inning situations, but the Red Sox have decided it is time to make room for emerging talent.

“I have the utmost respect for Adam and everything he brought to our clubhouse and bullpen over the past two seasons,” said Red Sox general manager Chaim Bloom. “He is a true professional, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
Ottavino is expected to attract interest from contenders looking to bolster their bullpen ahead of the season, with several teams likely to inquire about his availability.
As the Red Sox head into the final stretch of spring training, the focus now shifts to fine-tuning their pitching staff and preparing for what promises to be an exciting 2025 campaign.
