St Louis Cardinals confirm big news regarding 25-year-old talented infielder

The St. Louis Cardinals have made an important roster choice ahead of Opening Day by selecting infielder  for their 26-man roster. Fermín will take on a utility bench role, offering contact-hitting and defensive flexibility throughout the infield.

He’ll serve as the back-up utility role/a contact bat off the bench. The Cardinals hope to finalize their 26-man roster before they break camp on Sunday.” via Katie Woo on X, formerly Twitter.

Who is Jose Fermin? Cardinals infielder set to make MLB debut

Fermín’s inclusion may catch some off guard, given his lackluster MLB performance so far. In 66 career games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the 25-year-old has posted a .189 batting average, a .504 OPS, and negative WAR.

Nevertheless, the Cardinals are clearly banking on his strong spring performance and exceptional bat-to-ball skills to add depth behind regulars like Brendan Donovan, Nolan Arenado, and Masyn Winn.

This spring, Fermín has stood out at the plate, posting a .282 average with an .843 OPS, including a home run, five doubles, and nine RBIs over 17 Grapefruit League games. His solid showing as a potential bench option gave him the edge over fellow infielder José Barrero, who was also competing for a reserve spot.
