With Opening Day just a few days away, the St. Louis Cardinals are finalizing preparations.
The team has started making cuts to their roster, and after several tough decisions, another one was made on Friday. According to The Athletic’s Katie Woo, 25-year-old utility player José Fermín has earned a spot on the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster.
“José Fermín has made the Cardinals Opening Day roster, per sources,” Woo reported. “He’ll serve as a backup utility player and a contact bat off the bench. The Cardinals are aiming to finalize their 26-man roster before breaking camp on Sunday.”
Fermín’s strong performance in Spring Training earned him the spot. He has been consistent throughout camp and provides versatility with his ability to play multiple positions. In 18 games this spring, he is hitting .286/.354/.476 with one home run, nine RBIs, five walks, five doubles, and three runs scored.

At just 25 years old, Fermín appeared in 45 games for the Cardinals last season, posting a .155/.241/.197 line with one double and four RBIs. While he may not be a big name yet, his flexibility gives manager Oli Marmol valuable lineup options.
Other key decisions, like who will start in center field, are still pending, but this is definitely a positive update for the team.
