With Opening Day just under a week away, the Boston Red Sox are finalizing their roster decisions. The most recent move, as reported by Rob Bradford, is that a former All-Star with the Detroit Tigers, has been sent down to the minors.
Fulmer, who signed a two-year minor-league contract with the Red Sox in February 2024, missed the entire 2024 season due to UCL revision surgery. He had a strong showing in Spring Training, posting a 0.76 ERA over 11.1 innings while striking out 12. Since he can’t opt out of his contract, he will remain with Triple-A Worcester unless called up.

The 32-year-old, who was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2016 after going 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 159 innings, spent the first five seasons of his career with Detroit and last played in the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2023. If the Red Sox continue to face injuries in their starting rotation, Fulmer could be called upon as a depth option or as a bullpen arm capable of handling multiple innings. Among other non-roster invitees, starter Sean Newcomb has also impressed this spring, posting a sub-1 ERA over 9.2 innings. Newcomb was expected to be in competition with Fulmer for a spot. How Fulmer is utilized in Worcester could offer insight into how the Red Sox plan to deploy him if needed later in the season. Fulmer has battled several injuries throughout his career and is working on regaining his velocity.
