Virginia Cavaliers receive unexpected news that leaves fans devastated

Another center for the Virginia Cavaliers is entering the transfer portal after spending two seasons in Charlottesville. The news was first reported by Jeff Goodman, and Buchanan has since shared the report on X/Twitter.

The  Idaho native played 66 games over two seasons at UVA, starting 28 of them. He averaged 4.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1 block per game. This past season, Buchanan took a starting role but struggled offensively, particularly around the basket, and had difficulty handling the size of ACC bigs defensively. Despite these challenges, he had some notable moments, especially during a stretch from January 15 to February 3, where he averaged 8.4 points per game and recorded three double-doubles by being aggressive on the glass. While his consistency was lacking, Buchanan occasionally stepped up, providing depth for a frontcourt that lacked experience heading into the season.

Buchanan is the first UVA player to enter the transfer portal this spring, and he’s unlikely to be the only one, as Tony Bennett’s upcoming retirement and the program’s decision to move on from interim head coach Ron Sanchez signal a shift in direction. With a coaching search underway, many players may explore the portal, with some potentially returning depending on who is hired. Buchanan may find success moving to a mid-major program where he can better showcase his strengths.

As the offseason progresses in Charlottesville, the coaching search and Chance Mallory’s commitment decision are among the many developments to watch. More transfer portal news is expected, and Streaking the Lawn will continue to cover it all.
