Pittsburgh Panthers Face Roster Challenges Amid Player Departures

The Pittsburgh Panthers are facing a challenging periods

several key athletes have recently departed from their programs, impacting both their football and volleyball teams.

In late November 2024, the Panthers’ football team was dealt a significant blow when star junior running back Desmond Reid did not travel with the team for their Week 14 matchup against Boston College due to an injury. Reid had been instrumental in the Panthers’ offense, showcasing his versatility with standout performances throughout the season. His absence was keenly felt, as he led the team with 797 rushing yards and had been a pivotal playmaker in both the running and passing games.

The volleyball program has also experienced significant roster changes. Torrey Stafford, an AVCA First Team All-American and a cornerstone of the Panthers’ recent success, entered the transfer portal in late December 2024. Stafford’s departure is notable, given her impressive statistics, including 400 kills and 252 digs in the previous season. Her decision to transfer marks a significant loss for the team.

Additionally, incoming recruit Samara Coleman, a highly touted outside hitter ranked 77th nationally, announced in January 2025 that she would be decommitting from Pitt to join Texas Christian University (TCU). Coleman’s decision to flip her commitment adds to the challenges facing the Panthers as they look to rebuild their roster.

These developments present significant hurdles for the Pittsburgh Panthers as they navigate the offseason and prepare for upcoming competitions.
