The Washington Commanders are all-in for 2025 after narrowly missing their first Super Bowl appearance in over 30 years, losing to their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, in the NFC Championship game.
Heading into free agency, Washington had a lot of work to do, and they’ve made significant moves, bringing in replacements that have elevated both their ceiling and floor. The gap between the Commanders and Eagles was evident before the new league year began, but after the first week and a half of free agency, it’s starting to look like Washington is closing in on their rivals.
While headline moves like trades for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil have been the focus for the team and its fans, there is still plenty of work to do in adding depth. Building up solid contributors who can step in when needed will help raise the team’s overall strength.
One such recent move is the signing of former Los Angeles Chargers tackle to a one-year deal.
Sarell has spent the past three seasons with the Chargers after going undrafted out of Stanford. While his career has been hindered by a series of injuries, he has gained valuable experience facing some of the top pass rushers in the AFC.
Sarell is versatile along the offensive line, able to play both the left and right tackle spots. However, he will likely find himself in a similar role with the Commanders as he had with the Chargers, serving as a depth piece behind starting right tackle Andrew Wylie.
The offensive and defensive lines are often the most crucial factor in determining a team’s success, so ensuring these areas are strong will be key in how far the Commanders can go in 2025, especially if an injury arises. While Sarell’s experience may be limited, his size and length—standing at 6’6″ and weighing 322 pounds—will undoubtedly provide a valuable boost to the offensive line.
