the Memphis Tigers men’s basketball team has suspended two of its key players, guards PJ Haggerty and Tyrese Hunter, effective immediately. The university has not disclosed specific reasons for the suspensions, citing

privacy concerns, but emphasized that the actions were taken in adherence to team policies and the institution’s code of conduct.

PJ Haggerty, a redshirt sophomore, transferred to Memphis from Tulsa, where he earned the title of AAC Freshman of the Year in the 2023-24 season. He was also named to the preseason first-team all-conference for the 2024-25 season. Known for his scoring ability, Haggerty averaged 21.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game last season.

Tyrese Hunter, a senior guard, joined the Tigers after stints with Iowa State and Texas. He has been a consistent presence on the court, starting all 106 games in his collegiate career and averaging over 31 minutes per contest. Last season at Texas, Hunter contributed 11.1 points, 4.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game.

The suspensions come at a critical juncture in the season, as the Tigers are preparing for upcoming conference matchups. Head coach Penny Hardaway expressed disappointment over the situation but affirmed the team’s commitment to upholding its standards. “While it’s unfortunate to be without PJ and Tyrese, we have to respect the process and focus on the challenges

The team will now look to other players to step up in the absence of Haggerty and Hunter. Notably, Colby Rogers, a redshirt senior guard who transferred from Wichita State, is expected to take on a more prominent role. Rogers averaged 16.4 points per game last season and was recognized on the preseason all-conference second team.

The Tigers are scheduled to face the UAB Blazers in their next game, a matchup that now presents additional challenges given the recent roster changes. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Memphis adapts to this adversity and what impact it will have on their pursuit of an NCAA tournament berth.
