The Washington Commanders are continuing to re-sign their own players, bringing punter back on a new deal.
Since 2014, despite the chaos and drama surrounding the Washington Commanders, there has always been a steadying influence both in the locker room and on the field. The 34-year-old, the team’s punter, is someone who truly embodies the mindset of making the most of life, no matter the challenges around him. This attitude has made him a fan favorite.
As the 2025 offseason began without a contract in place, Washington secured a deal with Tress, ensuring that the Pro Bowl and All-Pro punter will return for another season, as first reported by NBC Sports’ JP Finlay.

“Commanders agreed to one-year deal with Tress Way,” Finlay said in a social media posting. “Bringing back the 2x Pro Bowler for a 12th year. Easy decision for a well respected player.”
Way entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and didn’t initially find a spot with the Commanders. However, once he did, he became a key player on the team, weathering changes in general managers, coaches, and even head coaches. He’s also managed to stick around through two team name changes.
Last season, Way didn’t see much action as a punter, with just 50 punts—his second-lowest total in his career—but he played a much larger role as the team’s holder, especially as Washington went through nearly 10 different place kickers throughout the year.
