On Saturday morning, the New Jersey Devils made several roster adjustments following the NHL trade deadline. Defenseman Seamus Casey was reassigned to the American Hockey League (AHL), while the team recalled Daniel Sprong from the Utica Comets.
Casey has appeared in only 10 games for the Devils this season, contributing four goals and one assist. Despite his offensive efforts, New Jersey is focusing on developing their defensive prospects, particularly after signing Johnathan Kovacevic to a five-year contract. Casey is eligible to remain with the Comets for the rest of the season and playoffs, where he has tallied 15 points in 22 games. He was also selected for the 2025 AHL All-Star Classic.
On Friday, the Devils acquired Sprong from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick. The 27-year-old has recorded 25 points in 19 AHL games, including three power-play goals and four game-winning goals. Sprong is expected to help address the Devils’ scoring struggles in their bottom-six forward group, with his strengths in shooting, playmaking, and skating.
General manager Tom Fitzgerald expressed satisfaction with the trade deadline moves, calling the acquisition of Sprong “a low-risk move with a high return.” The Devils aim to regain momentum with two upcoming Metropolitan Division matchups, first against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday and then against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday at the Prudential Center.
