The San Francisco 49ers made a minor move ahead of free agency by claiming cornerback off waivers. Tomlinson, a sixth-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, appeared in 15 games as a rookie, playing 45 defensive snaps and 318 on special teams. After missing the entire 2024 season due to an injury that landed him on the Rams’ injured reserve, he was waived yesterday.
The 49ers, familiar with Tomlinson from facing him twice in 2023, are focused on improving their special teams this year, having recently replaced their special teams coordinator with Brant Boyer. Tomlinson, while shorter than most cornerbacks at just under 5’8″, ran a 4.41 at the NFL Combine and could serve as a backup to Deommodore Lenoir at nickelback if he makes the team.
With the 49ers needing to address their offensive and defensive lines in the draft and free agency, adding a young, cost-effective cornerback like Tomlinson helps fill a roster need without overspending. Expect more waiver claims from the 49ers as they work to strengthen their roster in the offseason.
