Virginia Tech has made another splash in the transfer portal with the commitment of Pittsburgh linebacker Jordan Bass to the Hokies.

Bass becomes the 15th transfer addition for Virginia Tech and the fifth player originally from Virginia, joining Clemson safety Sherrod Covil Jr., Hampton defensive lineman Jahzari Priester, Tennessee RB/WR Cameron Seldon, and Eastern Michigan LB/DE James Djonkam. Bass has two years of eligibility remaining, plus a redshirt, after spending the past two seasons as a backup linebacker for the Panthers.

While at Pittsburgh, Bass recorded 25 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss and one sack, earning a 67.4 overall grade from PFF this past season.

Bass chose Virginia Tech over several Power 4 offers, with notable interest from USC and NC State.

A versatile linebacker, Bass has the potential to play any of the three linebacker spots. He is expected to compete for a place in the two-deep next season and could push projected starters Jaden Keller and Kaleb Spencer at the mike and star positions. His flexibility may also allow the Hokies to move Caleb Woodson to mike in the future as he gains experience if that proves to be the best lineup.

Virginia Tech still has the option to redshirt Bass if he doesn’t secure a significant role next season, but he could impress enough to avoid it, similar to how Spencer performed this year.

With Bass on board, the Hokies may still explore adding another linebacker, though it’s not a certainty at this stage.
