Major Breaking: Red Sox Add World-Class Star to Boost Bullpen Depth

The Boston Red Sox have brought in former New York Yankees pitcher Nick Burdi. The veteran reliever announced on Instagram that he has joined the Red Sox. Burdi, 32, posted a 1-0 record with a 1.86 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 9.2 innings during his time with the Yankees.

Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that Burdi is currently in minor league camp, with no invitation to spring training. It is uncertain whether his contract includes an opt-out clause.

Drafted in the second round in 2014, Burdi has a career ERA of 6.48 across 31 games. He made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018 and has also pitched for the Chicago Cubs.

Control has been a challenge for Burdi, as he has issued 19 walks over 25 career innings. He is expected to start the season at Triple-A, likely serving as a setup or middle reliever, as he hasn’t been a closer since his college days at Louisville in 2014.

Burdi’s career has been hindered by injuries, including two Tommy John surgeries in 2017 and 2020, and thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in 2019. While with the Cubs, he missed most of the 2023 season after an emergency appendectomy and a hip injury, which kept him off the mound after May 23.
